Well, all my sunflowers died & I blamed the slugs ... poor innocent little creatures ... no, wait a minute, come to think of it, I wouldn't have put coffee on my sunflowers in the first place if the slugs hadn't been eating them ... not sure now what finished them off though Confused

This year I only planted sunflowers in pots with slug & snail tape round them - no slugs, no coffee, lots of sunflowers Smile

I never use crocks. I think it stops the capillary action of the material which draws the water to the bottom of the pot. Crocks also create hiding places for slugs, snails and other nasty pests. I have had no losses or poor growing plants due to poor drainage so I`m convinced this theory works.

Hi able - don't use crocks either. Total pain in the butt when potting up or planting out as well as stopping roots stretch. I use tea bags Very Happy

I often use loads of crocks if I'm short of compost cos loads of plants are shallow rooting, and any way it's only like hydroponics int it. I like to use broken up polystyrene cos it's less dangerous than broken crockery. Cut my hand everso bad when smashing up a teapot with a hammer Shocked So been a bit wary since then

Wardy Wardy Wardy...the idea is to wait for the crockery to break not to go around smashing up your nice tea set Rolling Eyes Razz

Definately with you on the polystyrene though having cut myself way to often on bits of broken pot etc. I'm with the boys though I prefer to use none at all when I can. In fact I think the only place I have any is the bottom of our herb trough.

I'm particularly clumsy so get loads of broken pots and I was breaking the broken tea pot with a hammer when a piece flew out and cut my hand. I was wearing safety goggles but no gloves Rolling Eyes It cut my hand really badly and it was really deep. Still bear the scars so a bit more inclined to use polystyrene now cos it's safer
