my tip would be to use only material that has meaning for you.
favourite dresses of the girls, a bit of your nan's old apron before it is thrown out, a piece of a threadbare baby blanket.
denim patchwork looks good.
make loads of 'patches' smaller ones look better but are more tedious to do. I like to tack hem and press them to get a really good finish when 'butting up'
by taking the time to make a whole bunch of patches first you can get a good mix of colors right thru when you sew them together and can arrange them to get an idea of how they will look all together.

I've got a huge basket full of fabric, leftovers from dance costumes, stuff we cleared out from my grandmas (which no one could understand why I wouldn't just bin it  ), .............

I think there nust be something in the water - I'm about to start some patchwork too. I've decided to make a patchwork duvet cover for my daughter's cotbed. I'm in the process of getting bits of fabric now.
We'll have to compare notes Del, and see how we're getting on  |

3 boy and 3 girls costumes.................poor medieval and wealthy medieval
