Ovation

North

2 huge cobs per plant on well manured soil interplanted with butternuts. Very sweet and tasty, last well on the plant from ripe (4 weeks to date)

ASHWORTH (ORGANIC)

Apart from the fact that I murdered loads in the propagator Embarassed

poor pollination meant only 50% edible per cob, and the cobs were awfully small to begin with Rolling Eyes

on the plus side though,
short plants (only 4ft) so no shade problems.
staggered maturing so no sudden gluts

and they taste divine Laughing

I grew Ovation in 2003 and it was definitely a one-cob plant for me in my chalky soil. It also got smut. Tastes wonderful though, but needs isolation as it's a supersweet.

I now grow Lark, and that is a tendersweet; doesn't need isolation and does have two delicious cobs, and this year has also got smut (sob! only spotted it on Saturday). Another 5 year bed quarantine... but then smut is a factor of hot weather conditions, and July would have been enough to trigger it.

moonbells

(I'm also growing an heirloom called Stowell's Evergreen; it's a white cobbed plant and I've NEVER seen so many cobs on one plant, ever! Not picked yet, so we shall see. Shall report back.)

APPLAUSE an F1 supersweet variety.

3 cobs per plant, all massive and very well formed with no defective ones due to poor pollination or anything else. Also got 100% germinaton and survival.

Kept a few days as well without any adverse effects.

Minipop - the little stir fry sized ones
Up to 15 cobs per plant, very reliable, lovely earthy taste like sweet beetroot and tender enough to be eaten straight off the plant. Just make sure you pick them as soon as the tassles show to avoid them getting starchy and whatever you do don't wait for the tassles to go brown!

Very South - 5 minutes further south than me and you'll need to be a channel swimmer!

Battened em down Tara good and proper. No more seed buying. I bought me last packet a few days ago and declared it to be the end for at least a season.

PS I've not forgot I owe peeps seeds. If I spent less time on here and more time parcelling up seeds the better Very Happy

Need to revive this thread!! Razz I grew Applause last year and have to admit they were lovely, they will take some beating ... like Icy had 3+ cobs per plant.

Was reading about the yellow and white cobs ... anybody tried any???

Tried the ones from Real Seeds (you can now get the RS varieties through the Organic Gardening Catalogue btw) but I think it would be unfair to use last year to judge their performance so growing them again. Same goes for another open pollinated variety called Golden Bantam (now also available through OGC) which I got from a discount DIY store in Lincoln. Will try those again too. Last year (and previous to that) there were no open pollinated varieties of sweet corn available through OGC. In fact both them and Seeds of Distinction appeared to be more or less exclusively F1 with all their seeds. Both have far more OP seed this year so maybe pressure does tell. Very Happy

Looks like Applause are good (don't have) and Earliking are bad (do have). Evil or Very Mad

So where can I get Applause from? Who does it?

Tried Lark last year and it was crap (probably the weather) but no cobs to eat at all after about 40 from Ovation the year before.
