I've done Red Baron for the last couple of years - and they've been hopeless - just seem to bolt really really easily Confused

I'm doing Swift, Radar, Electric and shallot Jermor (when they arrive)

Not got em in yet, they're in their nets in the wash house. It says to put em in during decent weather

I've done well over the past two years with overwintering onions. The first lotty crop I ever grew Smile

can someone explain the point of shallots Embarassed

I know most of you grow them so they must be worth it, but I've always assumed they're just little, hard to peel onions so why bother?

not a retorical question by the way Shocked I genuinely want to know

They taste wonderful. They impart a sweet flavour I reckon. I wasn't sure what to do with them other than treat em as onions, or pickle em so I googled and found a recipe for roast ones, done in honey and balsamic. Flipping fab. I grew Mikor and they're purpley red. You soak em in boiling water for a while to make em easier to peel.

Yep, basically they are just far nicer sweeter onions with a slightly nutty taste. Cordon bleu onions like wots for posh people...... Laughing

I get the Longor shallots from the organic wotsit D&T... I tried the round ones as well but prefer the others, and they're easier to peel... They say to plant them in January...
If you make French dressing for salads, 1 finally chopped shallot in it does wonders Very Happy Also more delicate than onion on tomato salad..

BTW, finally found the name of those 'banana shallots' I miserably failed to find in France... They're called ECHALIONS, think they come from Brittany...
Anybody going to Brittany soon? Wink
