Thought Kestrel were 2nds? Least I grow them as those!

I adore the taste of Ratte and Pink Fir Apple, though neither have done diddly this year. Just not enough water when they were starting to put on leaf.

For quantity and worry-free growing rather than taste, the Sarpo blight-resistant spuds are great. For winter mash (when you put in heaps of butter, milk, seasoning, nutmeg...) the lack of strong taste doesn't matter so much, and the spuds are huge and slug-resistant, as well as being pretty much blight impervious. They roast superbly as well. Just don't buy them direct from T&M - they come out as 40-50p a tuber. They sell them at regional Potato Days for about 20p each!!

I recommend Ketrels but only in the 2nd early thread. Rolling Eyes King Eds for me every year. Even if the yield ani't always great, they are the best tasting commonly available maincrop there is. Yield on my Romanos look OK so far but not so inspiring on the taste front.

Desiree for standard do anything with them potatoes and Cara for bakers. I did a little trial on each rubbing off all but one strong chit on one half of the planting and the other half planted them as they were.

One half is growing away strongly and even got some flowers on the Cara still while the rest are well on the way to dying back. Trouble is I can't remember which way round they were Rolling Eyes Embarassed

I haven't dug any yet though so will update later.

Lottie order again - need three varities of maincrops:

Already put down King Eds cos I always grow em and Desirees on WardsDuck's recommendation. Left with:

Cara (grew em once and they were a slug fest)
Maris Piper
Picasso
Pentland Squire
Pentland Crown
Sante
Valor (grew these this year, alright yield but a bit boring)

Romanos aren't on the list this year Confused

Picasso is the improved version of Cara, less foliage apparently. They are very good spuds but I grew em best in containers of growbag or composted manure/home made compost. Mine came out lovely and clean and you get some huge spuds Very Happy

Tis between the two Pentlands -
Crown
Quote:
Tried and tested general purpose potato. Crown has huge yields, drought resistance and disease resistance.
Mild flavour and good texture, suitable for a wide range of uses.

Squire
Quote:
Tried and tested classic Pentland maincrop. General purpose but particularly good for frying, baking and mashing.
