No carrots this year Crying or Very sad they just failed to germinate or thrive Embarassed
Sowed the stump rooted Parmex in July (desperate) and they were ready to harvest this month - I thought they'd be naff but they are super tasty, although only the size of a small golf ball. Definite for next year Very Happy

I grew some early Nantes - good results and some Paramos which I liked a lot. Also grown some Samurai which are supposed to be fly resistant but I have had no fly so cannot comment. Nice red colour but a bit long for my soil - taste not so good as the others. Paris Ronde - nice shape but a bit bland.

Early Nantes rubbish for me for second year running. Poor germination and roots fairly small on what survived.

Autumn King second year running I've grown these. Very good germination, good straight roots, very sweet.

Navarre first attempt. Good germination, great flavour, keep in fridge well. What's slightly strange is the roots grew upwards as well as down so the tops are about 2" or so above the soil surface but have not greened or been carrot flied! Banking up of soil recommended.....

Germination of root crops was indeed rubbish this year all over our plots.

In good years, I grow Early Nantes (March sowing) and follow up a month later with Autumn King. The Nantes do split though if left too long, where the AKs just get bigger. I've had some whoppers.

Autumn Kings grow foliage first and only grow the roots after they've got a decent food supply, as it were.

They aren't fast growing, but great once they get there.

Chantenay red cored or some such name with red spring onions and parsnips. No nigella this time, just did the red onions. I mix the packets together. I didn't do nigella with these ones as the bed is rather small.

I sowed some carrots (Giant Red, from realseeds) 6 days ago and they've germinated already! Sowed them in the plastic bin in the garden, as I've pulled all the autumn king ones from there now. Don't know how these new ones will do but so far so good!
