This has been all over the news today, talking about schemes to counter balance the carbon emissions we all make, however having listened to both sides of today's argument, I'm really not too much the wiser. Like how many trees do I need to plant to balance having a car etc etc

Can anybody explain in words of one syllable what it's all about. I will look it up later but am about to try to learn the Greek alphabet Very Happy

All fuels have carbon dioxide in them, which is released as you burn it. Now if you burn a tree it releases CO2 which it has absorbed in it life, so you plant a new tree and it get sucked back in to a plant. A nice balanced cycle, and co2 stays same level in air.

But when we burn Dinofuels ie petrol coal diesel it is releasing co2 that has been stored underground for 1000s of years, so co2 levels have/are risen.

Some say ohh just plant a tree, but we have used and are using soo much dinofuel we can't plant enough trees to compensate. so carbon neutral is a big lie really, better to work on carbon footprint. Or as we say 'Reduce before you produce'

These schemes only exist to salve the conscience of the people who can't be arsed to do anything about changing the way they live and just think they can buy their way out of it. Tossers - those who run and profit from the schemes and those that use them. Evil or Very Mad

I have Gordon Brown on number 1 as he tries to stop me from running my van on green fuel while other countries including USA encourage it.

Trouble is that to properly do a carbon footprint is loads and loads of work and I'm concerned that to hit what they say they will the big retailers will cut corners which could make it a pointless excercise Sad

On the positive though if people do care it might see more use of local produce Very Happy

Don't get me wrong I agree with the footprinting. I'm just concerned they will be rushed through and end up being wrong which means the press will rubbish it Confused

Did anyone see that newspaper article about someone wanting to build a ruddy great road from north to south, smack through the middle of the Amazon rainforest? Think it was the Express. Emergency on planet earth, indeed. Evil or Very Mad

Yep, to little to late and all that Confused Whats really needed though is the big corporations to put pressure on the countries that won't do anything. I mean its not going to do any good when the climate really goes ape to point out the morale high ground we're on and say "I told you so".
