Yes bio diesel is evil, but I think like others you may have the wrong facts. Bio diesel is a mixture of new or used vegetable oil and up a small amout of dino diesel (dino as in normal derv), so yes its saving a bit of dino but the down side is it takes some nasty chemicals to get it to mix, something I have refused to do dispite G Browns insistence (Andy am me discussed this early last year).

The rainforest are being ripped up for palm oil and a complete waste, stuff like rape oil is just as effective and used neat produces very little emissions due to the low sulphur levels. Farmers in this country have been getting rid of dairy herds as not being viable and now starting to grow more oil crops, so this is the stuff we should be using. Bio diesel and similar is not the total answer but using it gives us a bit reprieve till someone finds a better way of fuelling heavy transport. And I have to admit my van does not run on it, as it is one of the few engines that cant take neat veg oil with out being modified,
any one have their heating boiler changed? I need a good plate heat exchanger!!!! Smile

I think a sugar beet factory here is making its own bio fuel on its site in Norfolk (I think - or Newark) which seems sensible. It's probably for its own use but it seems in this case that small is beautiful

Wren perhaps you could get your Ol to make bio fuel for your car (see Dick Strawbridge book) Very Happy He used old veg oil and he says that it's perfectly do-able for the average boff Very Happy

No NO what I am saying is we dont need to dig the forests up to make a bit of fuel, we can grow more rape. But until we find a better fuel for trucks and buses, we need to save as much dino as possible, and dont some irriate say use trains grrrr Confused Rolling Eyes

But but... that's the point, isnt it? They are ripping out forests to grow palm oil... Confused whether we're using it or not, seems irrelevant, it's still being done... Very Happy

I thought they used palm oil for cooking - in biccies and stuff ? Could be wrong. When BBc did that programme about orang utans they said it was used in foodstuffs. Not for frying. Probly the big conglomorates like mcvitees and the like use it in their stuff and put on the pack that it is vegetable oil, technically not a fib, so you can't boycott it ?
Dunno, might be wrong though.

I know it's used in factory-baked bread, cos they don't take the time to let the dough raise twice so needs to be 'softened' with palm oil.... cos its cheap...and I think they just put on label 'vegetable oil' .... I think....

Put the boot on the other foot, they could tell us to put all of our forests back, now that would keep the vegans happy, no room to keep animals. So we all could have grey skin and sunken eyes Wink

Palm oil is one of the worst for you to eat. It's very high in saturated fats.

If you've ever had supernoodles or the cheapo variants, then have a look at the ingredients sometime. They are nearly all made by deep-frying in palm oil. Confused

I only ever buy the almost fat-free supernoodles now. They're actually not too bad... as instant noodles go!!!!

The Rain Forest ... lungs of the world ... consider this ...

Quote:
The consequences would be truly awesome. The wet Amazon, the planet's greatest celebration of life, would turn to dry savannah at best, desert at worst. This would cause much of the world - including Europe - to become hotter and drier, making the last sweltering summer a mild foretaste of what is to come. In the longer term, it could make global warming spiral out of control, eventually making the world uninhabitable.
