Rolling Eyes I was pulling spuds up yesterday and I didn't see any slugs or eggs. They were probably hiding in the spuds Evil or Very Mad

I got pak choi Flo but it's going to seed so will be eating much of it tonight. I saw a huge fat slug in the compost bin the other day - mind you they do good in there I should think

So we all need ponds so I must dig out that piece of butyl ....... Very Happy

I've never seen so many slugs either - was wondering if it was cos we've moved and there are more of them in the country! Embarassed Laughing Laughing I had withdrawal symptoms from not growing anything this year so a couple of weeks ago I just dug over a corner of one of my raised beds and sowed some salad leaves - they all germinated, then disappeared overnight Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Thinking just how many goodies these b*****s have munched ... slug kebabs must surely make great moist fertiliser !!!

Imagine ... to plant brassicas ... first dig trench lay in kebab cover over with soil and STAMP down Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil ... plant cabbage ...

... what a fitting end Laughing Laughing Laughing

I always wonder if it's ethical to take a kebab skewer and go round the garden hunting for the slimy wotsits.

It's one thing trying to be green and kind to animals, yet another when it comes to slugs!!!!

(in the past I've dropped them in beer - I know a few humans who'd probably like to go out in a similar fashion Laughing Laughing though I wouldn't go as far as calling them slugs!!! Laughing Laughing )

Tis a big issue for us (ethical) veggies. I have lost loads to slugs this year - nearly all my squash, all my lettuce, a fair few of my brassicas and numerous beans. But I do think I am precluded from taking direct action of the murderous kind even if I could stomach it. Being organic stops me using slug pellets (I know that Wardy doesn't allow them to come into contact with the soil or the escape of poisoned slugs) as using them is against the letter if not the spirit of being organic. Beer traps are all that I am left with and I always start off really well, keeping them topped up, but a few months into slug season and I forget to get more beer. Confused

I collect slugs with chopsticks Wink dropping into a bucket of salty water as I go, then tip the slug/salty water down the drain (where I kid myself it helps to break down fats and filth) Cool

I keep finding slugs bigger than my fist this year....I thought it was cos I've moved but maybe it's a sign of things to come Shocked

I couldn't skewer a slug to save me life Shocked I know some of you may find this hard to believe but I really am too gentle to directly kill a slug with a sharp implement. I don't think I could drop em in salt either cos am too ruddy soft for me own good Embarassed

I planted out loads of brassicas this week and have duly filled me plastic boxes with slug pellets. Not the organic ones as they completely failed
The ones I bought are made to taste orrible to mammals so hopefully combined with that and the fact they're in boxes, shouldn't lead to any hedgehogs or birds eating them, although I wish they'd make em deliciousto rabbits Very Happy

Black slugs are detrivores and will not harm your plants.

They only eat (or are supposed to eat!!!) decaying matter.

Dunno what this one thought it was doing... I changed the food over and left Madam to it, but then she went out the door and left the flyscreen wonky, so you can guess what then happened. (sigh)
