We get BBC news 24 over here and cos of the time difference, we get the "news" that they show through the night at breakfast time.
Sometimes though these reports are quite interesting.
Today's was all about Kenyan French beans and airmiles. It put a slant on things I've not really thought about before. Kenya is quite unusual for African countries at the minute it seems, they aren't busy killing each other, nor is the President starving the half of the population which doesn't belong to his tribe etc etc. They are managing to develop and economy which in part is based on the export of vegetables to Western European countries. Cos we want French beans (and many other veg) all year round - the Kenyans are growing it for us - thus boosting their own economy and making the people more affluent, which is obviously good. However to get the produce here while it is still fresh it needs to be flown here, thus the airmiles problem which is obviously bad.
I'm all for the developing world developing and if that means explointing Western markets then great and it must be better to do it through agriculture than by mass producing dodgy toys or pumping out huge amount of noxious gases, but obviously the airmiles thing is an issue. Think I'll need to read some more on the whole airmiles for food thing - cos I used to just be dead against it.
Things are never as straight forward as they seem are they ?
