These are popular in America in the Shaker movement so those websites would give inspiration. They seem to have died out here since the advent of Ikea Very Happy

Forgot to say that you can make em out of strips of old woollen blankets which you can dye if needs be. Same with scraps of textiles I should think Very Happy Shallot skins make a nice colour gold coloured dye.

My gran had them and I remember my mother having another at making them when I was little and in those days there was a rug company specialising in selling kits. It was called Readicut. They might still be going

they are fab, easy and all you need is a good pair of scissors, a needle and some thread Laughing

Round ones are the easiest to start with Very Happy

Cut your material into strips. Medium weight fabric about one and a half inches wide....lighter fabrics a bit wider. Make them pretty long but all different lengths so that joins don't all end up in the same place.

I find that a good mix of shades, patterns and plains looks best but with an overall theme. For example.....a selection of different pinks and a couple of other colours that have pink flowers on....that sort of thing.

When you have a goodly bag of strips you can begin Very Happy
Take three different lengths, in three different fabrics and knot or stitch them together at one end.
plait them together.
when the shortest length runs out, join in another, taken at random from the bag. You can join with a knot but a simple stich looks neater, continue untill you get bored Wink
now, start to coil your long plait. Do this sitting on the floor. Take the beginning of the plait and make a spiral, fixing with a stith every couple of inches.
Keep it good and flat on the floor.
If you try to do it on your lap it ends up a bowl shape instead of a rug Laughing

Keep going untill you rug is the size you want and and make the last stitch a good firm one.
As a personal preference, I used to make a final plait, to go once round the outside in a darker contrasting colour just to finish it off.....but be sure the darker colour wont run cos the very best thing about ragrugs is that you can bung 'em in the washing machine Laughing

well, my instructions were for a braided rug

for a pull thru you need a latchet hook, some hessian, thinner strips of fabric and more patience Laughing

you can, however get much more beautiful designs.

one of the nicest pull thru rugs I ever saw was made from ladies tights!
All the different shades of brown with a few black highlights made for a beautiful, slightly shimmery pattern.

took the girl forever to do though Confused

Rolling Eyes well I've got lots so that won't be a problem Laughing

thanks girls for the links and advice, like the sound of the one made from tights, Abbie bless her heart dropped the iron on out new carpet she was mortified until she came up with the idea of covering it with a rug. So thought we could have a winter rug project that she helps with.

Crimplene Rolling Eyes

I think we should have a bring back crimplene movement. My mother used to call it crimp and everything was made out of it.

Never needed irons in them days. Mind you we did spark as we walked to school Laughing
