they are fab, easy and all you need is a good pair of scissors, a needle and some thread
Round ones are the easiest to start with
Cut your material into strips. Medium weight fabric about one and a half inches wide....lighter fabrics a bit wider. Make them pretty long but all different lengths so that joins don't all end up in the same place.
I find that a good mix of shades, patterns and plains looks best but with an overall theme. For example.....a selection of different pinks and a couple of other colours that have pink flowers on....that sort of thing.
When you have a goodly bag of strips you can begin
Take three different lengths, in three different fabrics and knot or stitch them together at one end.
plait them together.
when the shortest length runs out, join in another, taken at random from the bag. You can join with a knot but a simple stich looks neater, continue untill you get bored
now, start to coil your long plait. Do this sitting on the floor. Take the beginning of the plait and make a spiral, fixing with a stith every couple of inches.
Keep it good and flat on the floor.
If you try to do it on your lap it ends up a bowl shape instead of a rug
Keep going untill you rug is the size you want and and make the last stitch a good firm one.
As a personal preference, I used to make a final plait, to go once round the outside in a darker contrasting colour just to finish it off.....but be sure the darker colour wont run cos the very best thing about ragrugs is that you can bung 'em in the washing machine
