erm....the fruit on our unidentified quince bush is changing colour (from green to yellow) and some is starting to fall on the ground.

some though is good and yellow....quite big and still very firmly attached.

is the dropped fruit failing or ready for harvest?
anyone know?

we have no idea if this is an ornamental or eating cultivar but believe that no quinces are poisonous so we plan to make jam either way.

Dunno but I do know it changes colour like any tree this time of year. One down the street is just the same. You'll always get some amount of fruit dropping, supposedly if it's not viable. The one down the road seems to have fruit on it much of the time even when it's not leafy Confused

Was that any help Embarassed Laughing Quince jam sounds lovely Very Happy

I always thought that hard, underripe fruits make better jam. Haven't got any ornamental quinces but I do have a tree quince ready to plant when I'm up and running again! No use to you at the moment though Confused

ummm.... Confused

the flowers were like the top picture, the fruit are like the bottom picture Laughing
It's definately a sprawling bush, the fruit look like small apples and the branches can''t stand up straight for the weight Confused

As for recipes....the one I've found says

roughly chop fruit, add a bit of water, simmer for one hour, strain.
add 1kg white sugar for each ltr of liquid and lemon juice to taste.
boil (stir to prevent catching) and test for set every ten mins after the first half hour.

I do like a simple recipe Laughing does it sound ok? and I heard the pips are poisonous.....should I discard those before cooking?
