have decided to have two long, dedicated veggie beds at the back of my garden cos I simply won't get enough veg crammed into me flowerbeds and I'm getting stressed with rotation and root disturbance etc.

most 'above ground croppers' (i bet you know a posh word for them) will go in with the flowers, planters and hanging baskets....spuds in bags....etc.
I'm having one long asparagus bed and I'm thinking of doing the other as a square foot garden for me roots, shallots and odds and sods.

Anyone tried it? Confused

I tried it once but mucked it up by planting a courgette in the middle that went completely mental Laughing (got loads of courgettes though Cool )
so I need help with spacings etc......please.....pretty please Very Happy

I'm gonna have a sort of go at it this year Tara. I got 3 1.2m x 3m beds so they'll be split into 4 x 10 squares Exclamation I've already put some garlic in at 9 per square, and some broad beans also at 9 per square Very Happy The one I still haven't quite worked out yet is how to plant me peas Confused I've got the book so if you want me to look up spacings give us a shout Very Happy

The information is in detail cos I've seen it. It may have come to me via the Carol Klein Grow your own emails which link to the main programme site. Full plans are on there or the Harlow Carr blog. I've got them cos I'm doing it anorl. Not with the beds they have but with my pergola which is now laid on the floor crammed with hoss muck and not much soil at the mo.

I went to Harlow Carr to see the beds for myself Very Happy Not much in them though on Nov 18th only the dead hardy stuff like Kale etc They do use specific varieties but all the detailed planting schemes are available

I'll see if I can find the link Very Happy

I've drawn my grids out on paper (in real life the squares are 60 cm) and I hope to have 20 of them or thereabouts

Peas "Waverex" or "Avola" from Kings Seeds (12 plants per square)

Other March plantings/sowings Broadie Aquadulce x 6 plants per square
Mixed salad leaves with beetroot Chioggia or Burpees Golden (5 rows)
Red cabb Red Acre x 3 plants, Leek Jolant or Armor x 9 plants, kale Redbor,Perp spinach as a CCA x 5, spinach Tirza x 9, nasturtium Alaska,
carrot Sytan with onion Paris Silverskin x 5 rows. If you really like a particular veggie you just do more squares Very Happy

fantastic linkage there Wards Laughing

right.....I've been and bought some graph paper and I'm gonna start a luxury evening of planning (my most favoritest winter activity Laughing )

bit worried about the spacings though....why only four kohl rabis when you can grow 16 onions in the same space? my kohl rabis come out onion sized Shocked
also....they are putting in a courgette.........when I did that the other year it completely naffed up the whole thing Rolling Eyes it grew spectacularly well and smothered everything in the surrounding squares Shocked

hee hee, this square foot gardening is already fun Laughing
I'm off to steal some of Sophie's colouring pencils Twisted Evil

Courgette "Venus" Very Happy They say its compact

Sweetcorn "Northern Extrasweet" Harlow Carr planted five plants but found this was too many so recommended planting less but don't say how many.

I wonder if the exact numbers were published in KG mag or somewhere cos I have them duly noted down Laughing

Amendment to squash Sweet Dumpling which they are going to replace with Cream of the Crop and Little Gem. It only recommends planting one so I'd go with Cream of the Wotsit and I thought LG was pants in the taste stakes Very Happy

Tara can I borrow yer colours Laughing

Still can't see where they tell yoyu how many plants per square - and their squares are 60cm square Tara thats 2ft x 2ft so 4sq foot not 1 sq foot so it my only be 1 sweetcorn per sq foot (which is what Mel says in his book!)

I cut things out from the gardening magazines I get which I think will either be useful to help me on the desing course or on the plot - I'm sure I've got a square foot plan and planting guide - I'l dig it out when I get home Very Happy

I might try to do something technical like scan it and add it to the photbucket site - dunno if I can but it's worth a try Very Happy

Mel's book says

carrot - 16 per sq ft
cabbage - 1 per sq ft
brocolli - 1 per sq ft
cauli - 1 per sq ft

he don't mention parsnips but Pauline Pears book on growing veg in beds says 10 - 20 cm so 4 or 9 per ft depending how big you want 'em to grow I spose

Shallots I was gonna try 4 per sq ft
