I have hatchlings. My pond is teaming with life. I have what looks like dragon fly larvae. There is also loads of the usual stuff - water fleas, snails, leeches etc. I might borrow some of the pond dipping stuff from school so I can have a really good look.

a dozen frogs moved into our pond before it was even finished Shocked

so we hurried it up a bit and put some weed and a lily in quick this weekend which was lucky cos when we went out there to put the plants in we found two great dollops of frogspawn Laughing

poor things must have been sat there with their little legs crossed, praying that someone would build a pond Laughing

Tried a different URL for the photo.

It is small Wardy. In no way is it ornamental. It is a purely functional wilflife pond and is as small as I could make it while still being deep enough and having access points. The lump of couch grass at the end is the bog. The couch has invaded and I shall give it a good weed soon. I can stand on the grid so it is totally safe - but I should still not have it because someone might fall in which is surely far riskier than the tonne of glass I dug up today because glasshouses are allowed. Rolling Eyes

My very small pond is home to at least (and I mean at least) 14 frogs. That was what was visible today. I have no doubt that some were hiding under the water and I know that every bit of weed suppressant and grassy area will be accommodating a frog too. Very popular is my little pond. when it was first dug, it took two days for the first two frogs to move in!

So am I - when I approach the pond, the whole area moves as the frogs all jump in. I think planning it on paper was a good move. Laughing

But you must have more than one. One frog cannot make tadpoles.

I've been replacing an acer around my pond today. For some reason the old one started to grow and then suddenly died. Oh well. New one is a normal purpureum not a dissectum so won't look as tatty in the sun.

Meanwhile (to get back on topic!) I had to navigate the pond a few times while getting the new one in - and wow my goldfish has grown. Now I know where all the tadpoles went ! At this rate I'll have a 6" long fish before too long. Only spotted one of the camouflaged ones but think that's also a lot larger than it was... odd, that.
