as long as they are 240 volts you can fit the low energy ones in, what I was on about was the flush fittings its ok if they are fixed but 1 of our bathrooms have swivels in and the slightly longer bulb catches the trim. The other place you cant fit them is on dimmer switches, but someone now has cracked that altho we have not seen any on the market as yet. So check the bulb voltage make sure its not a low voltage (normaly 12volt) these will have a transformer hidden somewhere and where fitted in kitchens and bathroom. If you get stuck call me Confused

Thanks Green2 - I'm with you now - we used to have the swivelly flush ones in an old house & they were a real pain - bulbs kept blowing & they cost a bomb to replace. I'm pretty sure ones we have here are OK from what you say - they're not low voltage or anything - but we're hoping to move in a couple of months so it's not really worth our buying new low energy bulbs for them before we go! But now I know what to look out for/avoid when we're house-hunting, so that's helpful Very Happy

There's a thoughtful and slightly depressing article here

on incandescent bulbs, and how supposedly green Europe can't even do a simple thing that the non-Kyoto Aussies have done.

Plus a few ideas at the end of the main article.

Been hearing about this my self, but I do think they could be sold to Joe more, as the old guy near me is always complaining that his fuel bills are more than mine, has thrown his offer of 4 free bulbs from the council in the waste paper pile, 'they not that good' he says Mad

The other place needed to be sorted is tele's and set top boxes, they say tele's alone on standby used a complete power station and the set top boxes are doing the same, we have 3 and all run continually, so we have them on a single socket to switch the lot off on a night.

We should not knock those who have not signed Kyoto as some are doing their bit, even the yanks (just need them to dump the big engines) Confused

We've got almost all low energy lightbulbs and they're the older huge ones, or else long tubular-type thingies. I don't mind the slight flickering when you switch on, but they aren't all that bright, I have to admit. We'll replace them as they die and get the newer types. My spots in the kitchen are flush swivel ones, so have normal bulbs in and I do like good light when I'm cooking etc. The kitchen is also definitely the most used room in the house and I like it to be bright and cheerful.

Just been to Morrisons and they have Philips Low energy bulbs at 99p buy one get one free. So two for 99p. Same ones we have used before. They have the equalivalent to both 100 and 60 watts.
Their Hovis bread flour and yeast is also buy one get one free. (Bread flour is actually cheaper they take off £1.09p even thought neither the wholemeal or Granary I bought cost that) OH chuffed we got his 8 bottles of Real Ale with some of they savings. (I got a gardening mag)

Dom, they were 'embroiderers daylight bulbs' and you should be able to get one in any embroidery (and possibly any art) shop Very Happy

£24.99??? ow!

The Daylight Bulb Co I mentioned before has the 100W equivalents for £9.99, and even with their horrendous postage charge it's still less than £20 all in for one bulb (and obviously cheaper for more).

I'd love a daylight low energy bulb, though probably won't do anything about it until I lose all of the existing incandescents. I've three in the conservatory for the plants, and £30 is a lot...

£24.99 is for 8 of the little bulbs, Moonbells! Laughing
The big ones are £14.99 for 2.

Hi Dave or Tara! I'm OK, but busy doing last few things to house to get it ready to sell, & ploughing through estate agents' websites:

Went out to look at a couple of houses yesterday - one had big garden but needed more work done to the house than we could afford; the other was nice (& much cheaper) but the garden was smaller than our current one Sad . I suspect finding somewhere to suit me is going to be a long slog ... Rolling Eyes
How are things with you? - are you feeling settled into your new house/garden?
