About 6 weeks or so ago Abbie decided she didn't want to eat meat anymore, then 2 nights ago Jess came to the same conclusion. Apparently its since we got the hens, it has made her stop and think that she really didn't like the idea of eating flesh Shocked Abbie however has never eaten much meat atall so it was no great surprise Exclamation

Am wondering those of you out there with veggie sprogs, do you give them any extra supplements, am thinking specifically of iron.........all advice welcome Very Happy

All my sister's mob are veggie. She doesn't give them supliments although dunno how old your girls are but might be worth keeping an eye around time of the month (if you get my drift). She swears on OJ and ribena with every meal as it fixes iron. (prob telling you what you already know). Brekkie cereal is loaded with goodies - shreddies etc not that chooco shite stuff and toast and marmite is a firm fave with her 2. George has venture to eating meat here and there when he is out at mates houses. Mainly to try different ethnic stuff etc but Martha is a cow for eating and lives on raw fruit and veg washed down with juice (and as much cake as she is allowed to get away with Laughing ). I have an atrocious diet as I am quite faddy at times but snce they put me on folic acid (as I am an Ep and they dont wat to risk potential birth defects) thst somehow seems to keep me topped up. Work that one out Confused

Look into Blueberries too ... (maybe in muffins Rolling Eyes Laughing)

... they are reported to be the BEST wonder food Wink Other 'miracle' foods include broccoli nuts and yogurt of course.

... stir frys might be helpful ... did you this ...

Vegetarian Society might be helpful -

- they have sections in lifestyle bit for young people & for families.

I've been semi-veggie since I was 15 - can't remember whether I took supplements back then though, sorry Rolling Eyes - oh, wait a minute, yes - folic acid, had it on prescription since about then (but I don't think my low levels were to do with being veggie). Iron tablets make me sick - apparently that's quite a common reaction, so if you can find veggie foods with iron in, they're likely to be better.

children on a restricted diet should eat something orange with every meal. (or so says Sophie's gastro enterologist consultant)

apparently the orange thing (carrot, butternut, sweet potato, mango, tangerine etc etc) is what enables their system to 'take up' the vits and mins from the rest of the meal.

Brocolli for example contains loads of iron but kids bodies can't process it efficiantly (which is possibly why kids often don't like green veg he reckons)
orange things contain a substitute for the chemical their guts lack so to get the iron from broc they must also eat carrot.
am I making any sense at all? Confused

I've got a lovely recipe for falafels with orange & carrot salad if you need one Wink

I recall Tara reading that in the Eat your Way to a Better back book when my old man was in agony and waiting for his neurosurgery. The orange fruuit and veg loomed large in that so sounds kosher advice

My niece fractured her arm a few years back and the docs recommended she eat broc and vit B foods in general. Vit B foods are good for healing too so are essential

I suppose the crux of all this is to make sure the kids eat a very varied diet. Takes more thinking about I suppose but you're planning your own veg meals anyway Del so should be a doddle for yer mate Very Happy

Speaking of veggie meals I'm doing a lentil curry for tea cos I have lovely cauli and it makes for a lovely gloop, tin of toms bunged in too. Managed to get my mitts on some bona fide curry leaves yesterday too while on my travels in Lincs. Rarer'n rocking orse shite they are Rolling Eyes

Plumstead has a large Asian community so you can get them there easily. And it gives me an excuse to go and buy yummies like frozen samosas and parathas. Sluuuuuuuuuuurpppp

Me and Tara will show you the highs of Plumstead (both of them). Betcha cant wait eh? There is also a Chinese cash and carry in Charlton (bout 2 miles away) so it could be worth a trip if you really wanted to stock up. C&C stinks of jack fruit which is not dissimilar to dead and rotting flesh. Still wanna go ?? Laughing
