Also had loads of salad stuff and lots more to come. Some great red & green cabbage, turnip, broad beans. And still have lots more spuds in the ground .. pumpkin & various squash doing well (apart from the butternuts, not even a flower so far!! ) Toms still green, but at least they're there ... just LOADSA stuff.
So cheers, everyone Very Happy

I think no soil is best for carrots. me and lotty sec came to this conclusion when this year I grew fabbo carrots in just homemade compost mixed with sharp sand and rotted leaves (sieved) We added some carrot food (it said it on the packet, it was lying about in his shed) Don't know if you can still get it Confused They got off to a very slow start indeed and we'd more or less given up on them but they just got better and better (Chantenay red)

He reckons that the fly larvae or whatever they are (science not being my strong subject Cool ) possibly overwinter in the soil

That could all be bollocks by the way so I stand to be corrected. Mine are in a box (one of those pallet tops) about 4 x 3 foot. Got a few of them so filled the other one with carrot seed mixed with spring onion seed (another one of my ideas for deterring carrot fly)

Mine were sowed in april. The ones in the bin, I've been harvesting since july, the ones on the plot, sowed same time but a bit slower to get to a decent size. I reckon it's coz they're more crowded down there. The ones at home got thinned a lot more frequent.
