Not really - a perceived crisis because the media tend to focus on fashionable crimes to the point where we think they are endemic when in reality, they are either at a similar or higher level before they were fashionable. On the whole - the trend for crime is down and that is with more crime being recordable - Common Assault wasn't a recordable crime before - it is now and there has always been loads of them.

I agree in principle that the media do hype it all up, but do we not think that the crimes that are being committed are worse?

These are the number of recorded murders over the last few years - it has remained remarkably consistant

March 1999 - March 2000 = 760

March 2000 - March 2001 = 792

March 2001 - March 2002 = 891

March 2002 - March 2003 = 1,048 - (876) This includes 172 attributed to Harold Shipman

March 2003 - March 2004 = 853

March 2004 - March 2005 = 868

2005 - 2006 = 765 includes 54 victims of the July bombings in London

March 2006 - March 2007 = 759

March 2007 - March 2008 784(Provisional figure)

As a "law enforcer" Confused I do feel that there has been a general decline in the levels of respect given to people "in authority" - whether that be teachers, policemen or even Customs Officers. More people now seem prepared to give abuse etc to said persons than ever before and everybody now yells "I know my rights" even though they don't Confused

24 hour news and the "where there's blame there's a claim" culture have a lot to answer for in my opinion Cool

But in answer to Bob's question - no I don't think so, there have always been theives, vagabonds and toe rags Laughing Laughing Laughing
